Horsham Local History
Horsham is a city located in the Wimmera region of Victoria, Australia. It is situated on the banks of the Wimmera River and is approximately 300 kilometres northwest of Melbourne. The city has a rich history, which dates back to the indigenous people who hunted and gathered in the area for thousands of years before European settlement.
The Wotjobaluk people were the traditional custodians of the land, and they had a deep connection to the region's natural resources. They would regularly camp along the river, fishing and hunting waterbirds, kangaroos, and emus. During the First World War, Horsham made a significant contribution to the war effort, with many young men volunteering to fight overseas. The town's industry also mobilised, with factories producing munitions, uniforms and equipment for the troops. The Second World War saw a similar effort, with Horsham providing soldiers, nurses, and support staff to the Australian armed forces.
In the post-war years, Horsham continued to develop, with the expansion of its agricultural industry. The Wimmera Plains are some of Australia's most fertile farmland, and Horsham became a hub for the production of wheat, barley, canola, and other crops. The town also grew in size, with many new residential areas developed to accommodate the growing population.
